ZsZs. What was the occasion - the reason - to come here to Hungary? MV The main reason to come here was to teaching Certified Scrum Master Course, and secondarily was to do little visiting around the country.  ZsZs. What agile project management is? Is that something ground breaking new? It’s just a new buzzword? It’s a marketing term? How is it? MV When I’ll get agile project management of speaking in terms of scrum and that is one of agile techniques, I don’t think it’s anything groundbreaking or new, I think there is a lot of old techniques that have been repackaged, and not really for marketing terms, and maybe there are, but for being able to actually deliver products, which is an important thing for software development.   ZsZs But these goals have been for a long time valid goals. Why do we call now agile project management? MV Something had changed in the industry, and I think when they (subscribers of the Agile Manifesto) got together in 2001 and formed this whole agile, but people started to create new techniques ??? … being able to market them.  ZsZs. How do you see, what was the inter-relationship between agile project management and agile software development? Is it same? MV: Under the agile umbrella there are software product management techniques such as scrum and them without consider engineering practices and they include things like extreme programming or XP. And in their you have techniques they can use such as Test Driven Development or Pair Programming. And agile project management really only just focuses on the people side of things and not the engineering solutions.  ZsZs And as your mentioned before Scrum is focusing on Agile Project Management. MV: Correct!  ZsZs: Is it comparable Scrum to PMI’s PM book? What are the essential differences? MV: The essential difference is, I see in the roles. Within Scrum one of the roles in PMI is called a product manager. One of the roles within Scrum is called the scrum master. And the Scrum Master is really has no authority to drive the team, or make or create tests for the team, whereas a lot of the PMI project management style will act that way. Also Scrum has been heavily used for software development projects to deliver in short increments than old waterfall styles.  ZsZs: Is it possible to company who used PMI book’s techniques before to move toward Scrum? MV: It is difficult, because there are a lot of old habits within organizations, especially in large organizations that use PMI techniques. That being not an impossible thing to do. One of the things Scrum - as an agile project management technique - starts to show are the dysfunctions within an organizations and sometimes organizations can’t handle the truth - if that the right word – that comes out from this exposure.  ZsZs: What kind of corporate does Scrum fit? It is for a large companies or startup companies? MV: I’ve seen at working both of those types along with government agencies and none profit organizations. So it really depends on makeup of the team, that’s really going to executing this and than the support of that upper management and even middle management gives them.  ZsZs: Is it much more – appropriate - for internal projects or for external projects. I mean where the customer is external. MV: Again, I’ve seen used successfully on both models, most of my work is than with internal customers. There are companies out there and you can just go ahead and Google them. Are there some software, game development companies, are pretty heavily using Scrum and I would it concern those internal customers and also some large financial packages are using Scrum to develop their official software.  ZsZs Scrum is only for IT projects or has broader adaptation? MV: So I look at IT - is IT versus what I call the business side of corporations.- Scrum usually get started in the IT side because it is very developer centered at the beginning and as success starts happening within these projects, and they are start to delivering, the business wants to learn how to start implementing this within their organization. And this is where Scrum fits in very well with some of the Lean principles at manufacturing. Where the lean principles will look at – a lot of - the high level business processes and at the end of the day agile project management or things like Scrum can plug-in to those lean projects to execute them.  ZsZs: What is the penetration of Scrum or in general agile project management in the States? MV: I don’t think I can give clear data for that, one of the areas where you might want to look is on the Scrum Alliance website it’s. www.scrumalliance.org They keep also a list of companies throughout the world where are implementing Scrum today.  ZsZs: Is there any research or Scrum alliance support for research? MV: I know people tried but I’ve never actually seen results, that I could say 38% are using Scrum. It’s not there.  ZsZs: Is there big difference between Europe and the States in adaptation of agile project management methods? Do you see relevant differences? MV: Nothing major between corporations that are developing software internally, where I have seen differences is would be companies that do offshore work with ??? United States of other part of Europe. Their implementations are different because there is a concept, called a product owner, and this product owner is really your customer who is supposed to be on site all time and they are doing a lot with how do you do that, how do you implement that role within your organization and each organization does it differently.  ZsZs How do you see the future of agile project management and Scrum? MV: Just looking at the past course rates since Scrum Alliance has been formed, it seems to be almost doubling – I wouldn’t say in every year but - every two years and right now there is about 12000 people who have been certified by trainers from the Scrum Alliance or who work for the Scrum Alliance. So, it seems like it taking a large part of the market right now, and growing by ????? now. Also one of the way as I see this growing is as people work with companies they use Scrum and those people leave – to go to new companies – they bring some of those ideas with them.  Thank you very much. |
